Image description

The nationalization of the Suez Canal. In response to the British and North American refusal to finance the Aswan Dam on the Nile, the Egyptian President, Colonel Nasser, nationalized the Suez Canal Society (an international body whose shares mostly belonged to England and France) twelve years before the concession expired. The territory of the Channel has been declared an Egyptian military zone. Nasser's men have occupied the Company's facilities and offices, while Egyptian soldiers watch over the transit of ships. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 12 August 1956.
