Martin Waldseemuller was a German cartographer and geographer born around 1470. He is best known for creating the first map to use the name "America" in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, who had explored the New World. Waldseemuller was a member of a group of scholars known as the Gymnasium Vosagense, which was dedicated to the study of geography and mathematics. He worked as a professor of cosmography at the University of Freiburg and later as a cartographer for the Duke of Lorraine. He was a pioneer in the use of printing technology for mapmaking and his work had a significant impact on the development of cartography.
