Philippe de Champaigne (b.1602 d.1674) was a Flemish-born painter. He was trained in Brussels by Jacques Fouquier. His full length portrait of Richelieu (1635-40) illustrates his ability to successfully fuse Flemish and French traditions. He became increasingly popular after gaining a patron in the queen mother Marie de Medici. He went on to work for King Louis X111 completing multiple royal projects.
