East Timor's independence leader Jose "Xanana" Gusmao (C), escorted by an INTERFET soldier, helps carry a table for a consultative meeting with local leaders and supporters in Wailili village in Baucau, east of Dili November 8. In an interview with Reuters, Gusmao expressed concern about how World Bank and the United Nations were dealing with the transitional phase of the newly-liberated territory. He also said the World Bank was, at times, imposing its views on how the ravaged territory should be rebuilt, rather than listening to what the East Timorese wanted. EDC/CC
