Image description

Indonesian gemologist Mahardi Paramita holds up three rings set with gemstones at his office in Jakarta November 14. Mahardi said he had come across 20 to 30 gemstones with high levels of radioactivity. The latest contaminated gemstone he found was a three-carat "cat's eye" worth some 25 million rupiah (U.S.$7,000). The gems appear to have been bombarded in a nuclear reactor at a still-unknown location to change their colour to brown from yellow and dramatically enhance their value.
