Satire on the court martial of Admiral John Byng (c.1704-57) showing him labelled "a Fool". During 7 years war he was unfairly charged with cowardice by 'failing to do his utmost' to save Minorca from the French, and executed by firing-squad when King George II declined to exercise the royal prerogative of mercy. Voltaire wrote in'Candide' at the time 'il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres'
