Stumbling and falling. When William the Conqueror leaped ashore at Bulverhythe he stumbled and fell. His followers would have considered this a fatal omen, but with great presence of mind he exclaimed: "Behold! I have taken seisin of this land with both my hands." The omens attached to stumbling and falling have what may be regarded as a natural basis of thought, for as in the above case, the attention is eagerly fixed on the opening stages of any enterprise and a fall under such circumstances would appear, if not a catastrophe itself, the outward sign of one to come.
