Why "starboard"? "Starboard" means steer-board, or steering side; the name was adopted because the great oar, originally used for steering ancient craft, was on the right-hand side of the stern. The port side; originally called larboard, is the left side looking forward towards the bows, and the starboard the right side. Larboard was changed to Port to avoid confusion in sound. At night a ship shows a red light on her port side, and a green light on her starboard side. The expression "being on the starboard tack" means having the wind on the right-hand side of a vessel.
