Camel hair sleeping bag, 1899 circa. This bag was made by Jaeger and used by Alfred Leonard Purkis of the 43rd Company, Imperial Yeomanry, during the Boer War (1899-1902). Before joining the yeomanry Purkis had been a tenant farmer in Balsham, Cambridgeshire, and on his return from South Africa was granted the Freedom of the City of Cambridge. During World War One (1914-1918) he served as a captain in a Cavalry Remount Section in Northern France.
