Image description

An assassination attempt on King George III by Margaret Nicholson, a former domestic servant. The attack was unsuccessful; Nicholson was seized immediately by Yeomen Warders. The King took pity on her, shouting out: 'The poor creature is mad, do not hurt her. She has not hurt me.' George's calm and compassionate response to the attack endeared him to his people and he was greeted with cheers at his next public appearance at Kew. 1786
