The Sergeant's sash, Somerset Light Infantry. Raised in 1685 as the Earl of Huntingdon's Regiment of Foot, the Somerset Light Infantry first received its country title in 1782, when it became known as the 13th (First Somersetshire) Regiment. It is the only regiment in the British Army in which the sergeants have the distinction of wearing the sash knotted on the right side instead of the left. This privilege is believed to have been awarded to commemorate the gallant conduct of the sergeants when all the officers had become casualties in one of its early campaigns. Queen Victoria granted the title "Prince Albert's Light Infantry" in recognition of its distinguished gallantry in the campaigns in Burma (1825) and Afghanistan (1841-42).
