Travelling entertainers from Europe sometimes visited the North East in summer months in the late-19th century. This is the 'foreign invasion' of this picture's joking title. The boys' feathered hats, green jackets and bagpipes suggest that they are from Italy. They are entertaining the fishing folk of Cullercoats. The figures in the audience illustrate a range of different ages and reactions. This was a common theme in Victorian painting. The North-East artist Henry Emmerson painted many pictures in Cullercoats, where he lived from 1865;
