Catherine Okeover, Lady Shirley (d.1672)

style of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). Oil painting on canvas, Catherine Okeover, Lady Shirley (d.1672), in the style of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, her left hand is holding a fold of her blue scarf and her right hand a fold of her grey silk dress. She is also wearing a pearl necklet and pendant pearls as earrings and on a pearl jewel at her breast. There is a a grey drape behind her to the right. Catherine was the daughter of Humphrey Okeover and the wife of Sir Robert Shirley, 4th Bart. Her daughter was Dorothea, who married George Vernon c.1676, was her sole executor. After Catherine was widowed she lived in Rolleston-on-Dove, Staffordshire. A Sunderland gilt frame contemporary with house, one of set of five, matching, e.g. SUD/P/69 Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire
