Image description

a) The draft for the chariot of the Emperor Maximilian I, from the years 1514-1515, the so called small chariot. A four-wheeled carriage, drawn by four galloping horses, is decorated in rich pageantry shapes and covered by a magnificent canopy. The emperor, in rich robes, with scepter and palm branch in his hands, sitting under a canopy, putting his feet on a pillow, which is supported by two crouching lions. In the front seat, Philip the Fair, his wife Johanna and his sister Margaretha, all crowned with scepters in their hands. At the very front, the Archduke Karl and Ferdinand. In front of them, on the first seats her four sisters who are crowned but without signs of power. Over the wagon shaft two griffins are holding the imperial coat of arms with the double-headed eagle. b) The unfair judge (slander). Composition of 13 characters. On the right on the judgment seat the incompetent judge is sitting with long ears, beside him right and left female figures. Overridden: ignorance (Ignorantia) and suspicion (Suspicio). In front of this group the kneeling innocent defendant (Insons) which is dragged by hair by the slander, which is referred to as torch-bearing figure, in front of the tribunal. Now more people follow in female form, which are characterized as: malice, envy, deceit. Then the punishment follows with a sword, the error, and the haste, behind them follows a mourning figure that is overwritten with Penitentia. Last of all comes the Truth (Veritas) with a sun face on a bowl. Ink and pen drawing on white paper. Wien, Gerlach & Schenk. Verlag für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe.
