David, Jacques-Louis Inscription - Inscription at the bottom: "Je suis venge / Le Tyran n'est plus"; on a paper held by the sword: "Je vote / pour la mort / du Tyran"; on the reverse: "Le Peletier Saint Fargeau / tué au Palais Royal / par Pâris, ancien garde du corps / le 20 janvier 1793 / veille de l'éxécution de Louis XVI". ; Label - Inscription on a label affixed to the reverse: "Ce fixé représente Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau (1760-1793) / sur son lit de mort. This curious piece appears to be inspired by / or reproduced from Tableau de David, which has undergone the most / improbable peripateties. See pages 132, 133, 134, and 135 of the / book by procureur General Adolphe Wattinne, entitled: un magistrat / revolutionnaire. There is only one known reproduction of this painting / which is an engraving by Tardieu. It is in the Cabinet des estampes / de la B.B. nationale [sic]. A reproduction of this print appears / on page 129 of the above-mentioned book, and is to be reproduced from this fixed / The spirit is the same, and it is to be presumed that this painting / esteemed from the revolutionary period and of an indisputable / documentary value is very rare, as it is according to the descriptions of / connoisseurs the reproduction of the famous painting by David has / never disappeared.
