Image description

Fisherman Keith Seale stands in his boat off Little Manly Beach in Sydney Harbour where he casts his nets and hauls fish onto the beach, only a short swim from crowded commuter ferries. Unlike Sydney's first inhabitants, the Eora Aborigines, who fished the harbour merely for food, sometimes catching a migrating whale and barbecuing the huge beast on a beach, today fishing on Sydney Harbour is big business. Twenty five commercial fishermen catch more than 100 tonnes of mullett, lobster, bream and prawns each year from the harbour, once used as the city's garbage dump, with toxic waste virtually killing of its marine life.
