Competitors in the Avon Descent, promoted as the world's greatest white water classic, wade through foam as they pull their boat over a weir, or manmade dam, on the Avon River near the township of Northam, 100 kilometres east of Perth, August 4, 2001. The two-day, 133 kilometre race, involved a record field of over 700 competitors making their way down the river to the capital city of Perth in canoes, powerboats, kayaks and skis.
