Image description

Greenpeace activists return alleged toxic effluent into the grounds of the plastics factory run by Electro Chemical Industries in Haifa October 17. The factory supposedly discharges its waste on a public beach. Greenpeace activists landed on the beach using inflatables from the Greenpeace ship "Rainbow Warrior" and set up a pump and returned the effluent into the factory grounds. The "Rainbow Warrior" has been touring the Mediterranean raising awareness on the dangers posed by pollution, and calling for full ratification of the Barcellona Convention protecting the Mediterranean. Eleven activists, 10 Israelis and one German, were held by police for questioning and later released. DZL/CLH/AA
