Triumphs of the Mother of God or Panos de Oro, c.1500-02 (tapestry)

Anunciation (La Anunciación). Detail of the central scene: inside a temple, the Archangel Gabriel, on the left, delivers the message of God in proclaiming his son's conception in Mary, which should be called Jesus. Jesus Christ sits in majesty in the center with his mother Mary at his lower right, who holds a prayer book. Both Jesus and Mary are surrounded by the seven Christian Virtues, such as Temperance holding a clock, Faith with a fish, and Charity with a heart. These panels also symbolically recall specific events in the lives of Juana and Philip the Fair: their betrothal, their marriage and opulent court in the Netherlands. Second tapestry in the series.
