Image description

Fern-case, upper part of Wardian case, of glass in iron frame, painted in white and gold, with tall central dome topped with spike and interior lined with grey gravel.. Made by Andrew Brown, tinsmith to the Royal Infirmary and scientific instrument maker to Lord Lister. It is likely that the case was made in Andrew Brown's workshop, located in close proximity to Argyle Street, Glasgow between 1860 and 1880. It is one of approximatly 9 original fern cases in the UK, and without doubt the finest example in a public collection.
