Portrait of 30-year-old U.S. Artillery Capt. John M. Schofield, photographed as a newly-promoted Brigadier General of Volunteers in Mathew Brady’s studio in Washington, D. C., late 1861. After serving in the Civil War, he would become Superintendent of West Point and a Lieutenant-General in command of the entire U.S. Army, for whom Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii, would be named.
