A papal ceremony (creation of cardinals?): Paul IV. [Giampietro Caraffa, 1555-1559] stands in front of the papal throne, reading from a book which two cardinals hold open; a third cardinal, with a cardinal standing on each side of him, kneels on the stops before the throne holding a book open; four other cardinals and several dignitaries stand or kneel about the Pope. Executed by Apollonio di Bonfratelli: the letters "A P" are on the right hand side of the miniature, and in cartouches on the right and left hand borders are "APP" and "D. B. F." ("Appollonio di Bonfratelli fecit": see Cat ., App. ii. 13). Circ. 1555-59. 12 5/8 X 9 3/8 in.
