Portrait of Mandan Chief, Mato-Tope or "Four Bears". He wears a shirt made of bighorn sheepskin, adorned with ermine tails, locks of hair, quillwork outlined in beads. He wears a large headdress with eagle feathers The red markings on his skin have been identified as old war wounds and the symbols on his shoulder represent brave deads. He holds a lance in his right hand. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.
