Like his contemporary, the painter Beltran-Masses, there is a decadent flavour to Apperley's romantic Spanish subjects, which were very popular with the Spanish upper classes. Affected by the upheavals of the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Tangier in 1932. The model for this painting was his second wife Enriqueta Contreras, the daughter of a stone mason.
