Tales of St. Peter Martyr (Storie di san Pietro Martire), by Andrea di Bonaiuto, 1365-1367, 14th Century, fresco
Detail. The scene depicts the Pilgrims at the martyr's grave, among them it is possible to notice some invalids: in the right edge one can see a man with a bandaged leg who rests on a cane, while in the centre a blonde woman lies on the ground, surrounded by other crouched femenine figures; most of the pilgrims stand, turned towards the sarcophagus, that is placed in the upper side of the fresco, but some of them are kneeled, like the man with the long red cloak, on the left in the lower part; in the centre of the scene two characters stand out, a man and a woman, seen from behind, who lift their children in order to allow them to touch the grave; the sarcophagus is finely decorated with octagons containing winged angels' figures in the case and half-length portraits of saints in the cover
