Born Araminta Ross into slavery (1822-1913) American abolitionist and political activist. Rescued about seventy enslaved family and friends using the Underground Railroad. Helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for raid on Harpers Ferry and during the Civil War, served as an armed scout and spy for the United States Army. In later years, an activist for women's suffrage.
