Boats moving a burnt out ship on the Suez Canal at Port Said, Egypt, 1916 Photograph, World War One, Middle East (1914-1918), Egypt 1916 Image caption states: ‘Remains of a burnt out ship on the Canal at Port Said.’ This image was taken by Corporal Joseph Egerton who was stationed in Egypt and Palestine. Armed with his camera, he took numerous photographs of Egyptian scenes and the local people. Port Said was an important hospital centre during World War One, it received the wounded from the Sinai and Palestine campaign. As the northern outlet of the Suez Canal it had key supply links with Europe and the Western Front. From a collection of photographs taken by Corporal Joseph Egerton, Shropshire Yeomanry in Sinai and Palestine
