Sneden was a map-maker for the Union Army during the American Civil War; his seven volume diary concerns his service in the 40th New York Infantry Division and as a topographical engineer in the III Corps, Army of the Potomac; headquarters of Pierre Beauregard (1818-93) and Joseph Johnston (1807-91); both generals in the Confederate States Army who defeated the Union Army at the First Battle of Bull Run, 21st July 1861; Battle of Manassas;
