Image description

Reconstruction of the East Front in 1662 The area to the east of the palace was originally part of the hunting park and it was not until the reign of King Charles II (1660-85) that the gardens began to take shape. The King ordered the construction of a canal (the Long Water), which ran from the palace into the Home Park. It can be seen on the left of this image. The canal was shortened at the end of the 17th century Artist: Peter Scholefield
