Image description

This is the final scene from a tapestry cycle designed by Rubens depicting the life of Achilles, a Greek hero who participated in the ten-year war with the Trojans. Guided by the god Apollo, the Trojan prince Paris has shot an arrow through Achilles’ vulnerable heel. Mortally wounded, Achilles is eased to the ground by a companion. The animals in the foreground mirror the death of the hero: the noble eagle is killed by the wily fox.
