Brazilian singers Afro-X (L) and Dexter who together form the rap music duo "509-E" pause in the courtyard of the Carandiru penal complex, where the two are inmates of Latin America's biggest prison, on June 21, 2000. Carandiru houses 7,000 of the country's most violent criminals, where "509-E" denotes the number above the rappers' prison cell. Rather than wallowing in despair, the pair penned 12 songs on the album, "Proverbs 13," signed up with a record label and even shot a music video for MTV. The music rants about an unfair justice system and growing up on the wrong tracks in a country where more than a quarter of the 165 million people live in poverty.
