General Erich Ludendorff, Hindenburg's Chief of Staff since 8/22/1914, had since the victory at Tannenberg a legendary reputation. From 1916 he served as 1st Quartermaster General responsible for military warfare. After 1919, he was active politically in the nationalist wing of the German right.
