Spacecraft, USA, Voyager Voyager 1 spacecraft, 1977. Model (scale 1:48). Voyager 2 was launched from Cape Canaveral on 20th August 1977 and Voyager 1, which was placed on a faster trajectory, followed on 5th September. Voyager 1 arrived at Jupiter in the spring of 1979, providing images which revolutionised our understanding of the giant planet, as well as several of its moons. It reached Saturn in November 1980, and then explored Titan, Saturn's largest satellite. Voyager 2 flew past Saturn in August 1981, for Uranus, which it passed in January 1986, and Neptune, which it reached in August 1989. Both Voyager spacecraft then continued their journeys out beyond the solar system towards interstellar space, from where they are continuing to transmit data back to Earth. ©SSPL/Science Museum
