Section of the high lighthouse upon the Spurn Point', c 1767. Engraving of 1784 by J Record showing a sectioned illustration of the Spurn Point lighthouse designed by English civil engineer John Smeaton (1724-1792) in 1767. It was built between 1772 and 1777 at Spurn Point, on the mouth of the river Humber in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Smeaton's revolutionary design for the Eddystone Lighthouse off the coast of Devon in 1756 set a precedent for later lighthouse engineers by being built completely of stone. This project was one of several which followed his earlier success. ©SSPL/Science Museum
