FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-GUYANA-INDIANS - Canadian engineers survey a slurry lake at Cambior Inc's Omai goldmine in Guyana. A retaining wall of the lake burst in August 1995, sending three to four million cubic meters of cyanide- and copper-laced slurry into the river Esequibo, endangering wildlife and residents who use the river for drinking and bathing. Despite the spill, mining interest in Guyana remains strong, prompting environmental groups to warn of the dangers of uncontrolled expansion. Photo was taken in August 1995. GUYANA INDIANS
