Image description

Framwelgate Bridge was a 15th century replacement of an early 12th century bridge, and was widened in the 19th century. It has two elliptical arches spanning the river, one of which is visible, and a central cutwater. In the south-east is the castle, and the exterior walls of the north and west range are visible. The north range houses the castle's chapels, including the Bishop's rooms in the west. The west range housed the kitchen and halls, and both ranges are now used as part of Durham College. In the background is a partial view of St Mary the Virgin's Cathedral Church, showing the twin west towers and crossing tower. The main body of the cathedral dates to 1093-1130, with the west tower tops added 1241-c1280, and the top stage of the crossing tower added 1464-88. In the foreground is a weir that extends north towards the former Bishop's Mill.
