Image description

This small panel, called a predella, is a fragment of a larger structure and once formed part of the base of a complex altarpiece (unidentified). It depicts the visit to the newborn Christ of the three kings, the eldest of whom prostates himself devotedly in front of Mary. The altarpiece base was composed of additional scenes from the New Testament, three of which survive: the Visitation (also in The Courtauld Gallery collection), the Nativity (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) and the Flight into Egypt (Lindenau-Museum, Altenburg, Germany).
