Image description

Infantry officer thought to be Lord John Douglas Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyle (1777-1847), 1806 circa. Miniature portrait in watercolour on ivory, by George Housom (fl 1796-1806), 1806. In a glazed gilt frame with a suspension loop. The glazed back holds a piece of paper inscribed in ink ‘G Housom/ 1806/ Lord Campbell’ over the words ‘No. 1 Three Guineas/ 2. Five Do./ 3. Seven’. This portrait probably depicts John Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll (1777-1847), who was an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards from 1797 and a captain from 1799. Campbell served under Sir Ralph Abercromby in the Netherlands during the French Revolutionary Wars of 1792-1802. He retired due to ill health in 1801, but was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the Argyll Volunteers in 1803 and Colonel of the Argyll and Bute Militia from 1809. The Company Officer wears a scarlet coatee with blue facings, gold lace, buttons by pairs, a gold epaulette with a silver crown and garter on his right shoulder.
