Image description

Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878). Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Elizabeth Albana Upton, Marchioness of Bristol (1775-1844) by Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878), 1845. A three-quarter-length portrait of a middle-aged woman, gazing at the spectator, hands clasped in front, wearing an orange dress with white lace collar and cuffs; dark-greyish stole draped over arms; sapphire and pearl brooch at neck and similar small pendant hanging from chain; black lace veil over white lace frilly bonnet tied under chin, curls around forehead; background of pillars and distant landscape in shades of blue on right side. (According to Farrer, this is a copy after Grant). See also ICK/P/29b engraving in gilt frame (in Museum Store). She was the eldest of the three daughters of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown (cr.1776; d. 1785) and Elizabeth Boughton. Married in 1798, Lord Frederick William Hervey, later 5th Earl and 1st Marquess of Bristol (1769-1859) to whom she bore six sons and three daughters. This marriage was strongly opposed by Frederick’s father, who had wanted him to marry the illegitimate daughter of the King of Prussia. The Albana walk in the grounds is named after her. Her eldest son, Frederick William, (1800-1864) became 2nd Marquess of Bristol. Ickworth, Suffolk (Accredited Museum)
