11 Seneschal Lane, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1929 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "11 Seneschal Lane - 1834 in 'Crown St', - section of Front of this, one of the oldest & largest houses in Douglas. The windows of the first floor are three of the seven on the Lane. Photo of the cellar entrance of this house in Series VI. Vide Museum Journal, Inventory of Ornaments etc.. Douglas Fort (17th cent.) and in ' the big sellar in ye towne'. There is no bigger now & doubtless this the biggest then. It is a very ancient house. However, the cellar beneath No.1 Fort St., when this house, long known as 'The Old Fort', came to be taken down) was a surprise. There was no cellar in any part of the early town anything like the size this proved to be when the Fort on the Pollock Rocks was functioning, this house was the nearest building to it on the shore: some 135 yards from the Fort centre. The rampart was about 90 feet in diameter which would make No.1 Fort St. some 120 yards from that side of the rampart. See photos I got of the heavily stone & brick built arch. P.C. series Route I."
