Image description

Rear-Admiral Lord Adolphus FitzClarence, GCH, ADC, RN (1802-1856). Based on the uniform the sitter is wearing, the painting must date after 17 May 1823,when he became a Commander (confirmed from his official Admiralty record which I obtained from the National Archives). Those below the rank of Commander didn't have two epaulets. It's hard to see if his epaulets feature the anchor or anchor and crown which a Captain would have, but if they do not, then the painting would date before 24 December 1824 when he attained that rank (Information about date is kindly supplied by Dinah Sanders whose biography of Adolphus FitzClarence is forthcoming, 2013).
