"LAW-BOOK" of the Iron Mills at Winlaton, etc ., co. Durham, founded circ. 1690 by Sir Ambrose Crowley, Knt. ( ob . 1713), containing one hundred and thirteen regulations for the working of the mills, the behaviour and government of the workmen, the education of their children, provision for them in time of sickness, poverty or old age, etc . The original laws were framed by Sir A. Crowley, and were augmented by his son John Crowley, whose confirmation of his father's general rules for the "good government" of the mills is entered on f. 90. Additional entries, however, were made as late is 1782 and 1807 (ff. 109, 115). For an account of Sir A. Crowley and his iron-works see Surtees, Hist. of Durham, vol. ii., 1820, p. 272. On f. 1 is a letter from Sir. A. Crowley to Sir William Bowes, Bart.; Winlaton, 1 Dec. 1702. Paper; ff. 162. xiith-xixth centt. Folio.
