The scene depicts the rebels Kennybol and Guldon Stayper, who have entered the Black Pillar gorge, just as Kennybol has fired a shot that reveals their presence, and corresponds to the text: "The shot was gone before Guldon Stayper, who had thrown himself on the arm of the imprudent hunter, could stop it. - It was not the wail of a wildcat that answered the noisy blast of the rifle, it was a hideous tiger's roar, followed by an even more hideous burst of human laughter."
