Image description

Chryses vainly Soliciting the Return of Chryseis before the Tent of Agamemnon or Agamemnon refusing to Return Chryseis to her Father Chryses by Jacopo Alessandro Calvi (Bologna 1740 - Bologna 1815) and/or Domenico Maria Viani (Bologna 1668 - Bologna 1711). Agamemnon stands in centre with his right hand on Chryses's chest, pointing with his left hand. Chryses, on the right, holds a wreath and staff in his left hand and gestures down to Chryseis, who sits on the floor to the left. Behind her is Agamemnon's tent with helmeted and other figures. In the right background the sail of a ship is being furled. According to Greek mythology during the Trojan War (prior to the actions described in Homer's Iliad), Agamemnon took Chryses' daughter Chryseis (Astynome) from Moesia as a war prize and when Chryses attempted to ransom her, refused to return her.
