Kitton, Frederick; after Hablot Knight Browne. This watercolour of the turned head and shoulders of Mary Hogarth, with a flower in her hair and breast, and a circle of blue background behind is by F. G. Kitton, after an oil painting by Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz'). Mary was a constant companion to Catherine during her courtship and the early days of her marriage to Dickens, and Mary's death at the age of seventeen affected Dickens profoundly, as can be seen in the descriptions of the deaths of young female characters in his novels.
