Image description

Birth of the Roman Empire. According to legend, to enter Rome, the Etruscan army had to cross a narrow bridge. Three men stood alone on that bridge to defend their city against the invaders. Inset shows Lucius Brutus, captain of the last Tarquin king's bodyguard, who led the coup that drove the last king out of Rome. He became one of the republic's first two consuls, but was killed in battle. Original artwork for illlustration on p15 of Look and Learn issue no 1007 (27 June 1981).
