This December marks the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista armed uprising when indigenous Mexicans rose up to demand their rights and customs be respected. Acteal is the scene of the worst instance of inter-community violence in Chiapas since the 1994 Zapatista armed uprising when indigenous Mexicans rose up to demand their rights and customs be respected. On December 22, 1997, a group of anti-Zapatista paramilitaries attacked the village and murdered 45 men women and children. Religious and political differences are the cause of constant violent attacks between community groups in Chiapas.
