Robert Knox Sneden (1832-1918) was a map-maker for the Union Army during the American Civil War; his seven volume diary concerns his service in the 40th New York Infantry Division and as a topographical engineer in the III Corps, Army of the Potomac; fortification in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina; the first shots of the Civil War were fired from here at the Battle of Fort Sumter, April 12-13 1861, which resulted in the Union army surrendering the fort;
