Image description

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "In this second print of the demolition of No.2 S. Barnabas' Square, one can glimpse the triple, ponderous, brick arch of its cellar. And there can be noted a mass of some of the masonry on Right that for a century has screened the West end of the Church. From now on, S. Barnabas' Church will have its natural entrance by its West door. Few have used it. I often did in my apprenticeship, as one coould drop in there unobserved. It is the only church I ever knew where one had to face the congregation on entering. It is evident that Nos. 2 & 3 (Moore's Place) S. Barnabas' Square must have long antedated the erection of the Church: consecrated 1833. In few circumstances, if any, were the early deeds re the very old buildings looked into. (2.1.35) Mr Clague, directing demolitions- Builder, & Victoria St. caterer [?] Mr Jas. T Clague, told me that there having been some dispute over the boundary of No 2 St. B. Sq and the Church, search was made at the Record Office; and it transpired that No 2 was to be the residence of the first Vicar for ten years, rent free, should he accept the offer: which he did. By which time I suppose, possibly erroneously, the Vicarage had been erected above Finch Road. That would be 1843. A large number of the Finch Road Villas appear in Pickering's Litho of 1832."
