Image description

It was realised by Gaspare Guercio, Carlo D'Aprile and Gaspare Serpotta to celebrate the glory of Philip IV of Habsburg, king of Spain and Sicily, called Philip the Great.Around the pedestal the four parts of the Earth known at that time (Europe, Asia, Africa and America), on which the king of Spain ruled, are depicted. On the first level there are the statues of the four Moors, or the previous kings of the countries that went under his domination. The work is adorned with plaques and coats of arms of the most important families in Sicily. The original statue of Philip IV was destroyed during the Sicilian revolution in 1848 and was replaced in 1856 by the current marble statue representing King Philip V of Spain and was realised by Nunzio Morello Palermo, Piazza del Parlamento: il "Teatro Marmoreo", monumento a Filippo V, prospiciente Palazzo Reale (o "dei Normanni"). Particolare.
